It's a hot sunny day. Your throat is parched. So what do you do? Reach for that bottle of cold water in your fridge? Consider for a moment that a typical refrigerator uses between 600 and 900 kilowatt hours per year (although an efficient one will use somewhat less depending on the size). Refrigerators and freezers typically make up about 17% of total residential electricity consumption in the United States [1] and the continual opening and closing of a fridge door doesn't help! "Matkas", to which I will shortly introduce you, can cool your drinking water by up to 14° C (~25° F ) lower than room temperature [2] without using any electricity! [...]

According to a press release dated Dec. 2008, Stirling Energy Systems (SES) has a purchase agreement with Southern California Edison for 500 MW of power. This agreement can be expanded up to 850 MW.
